Today’s superfood, spirulina, is one of the more well known superfoods and one I’m asked about on a regular basis.

What is spitrulina?
Spirulina is a very nutrient dense deep sea green-blue algae. It grows naturally in mineral rich waters and is one of the most popular superfoods used and loved to date. Spirulina has been used for centuries for its healing and medicinal qualities and for its high protein and endurance boosting properties.
Benefits of spirulina
As mentioned above, spirulina contains many important nutrients including B Vitamins, protein, magnesium, antioxidants and many more. The combination of the nutrients found in spirulina are responsible for its many benefits which include the following.
High in antioxidants and anti inflammatory properties.
Preventative against the growth of cancer cells
Lowers LDL or “bad” cholesterol within the body
Lowers blood pressure
May help with pain relief
Contributes to bone health
Good for skin health
May speed up hair and nail growth
How to use it
I like using spirulina in my smoothies. The taste isn’t my favorite, but the benefits are so I use it regularly and I add fruit to sweeten my spirulina smoothies. Banana is a super simple addition to a spirulina smoothie; it’s sweet and masks the tastes and makes your smoothie extra creamy!
