Superfood spotlight: Turmeric

Hello there beautiful people, I hope you’re all doing well.

Welcome to Vol. 4 of the Superfood Spotlight series. Here are the first three in case you missed any:

Superfood Spotlight: Chlorella

Superfood Spotlight: HEMP Protein

Superfood Spotlight: MACA

I used the above superfoods in my daily smoothies and shared the recipes in my stories. With hemp and Maca, I also added a couple of recipes where I used them to make healthy treats.

This week’s superfood, turmeric, is a little different in that I use it mainly in food preparation. Literally most of my savory dishes, and some sweet drinks, contain turmeric.

What is Turmeric

Turmeric is a medicinal root, similar to ginger only in it bright orange and tends to be smaller in size. It’s been used medically for many many years and it’s one of the main ingredients in curry powder.

It has a warm and slightly bitter taste and and especially when used fresh, it stains everything. Your fingers, nails, clothes, kitchen counters – so be warned. However when using turmeric powder, as I often do, it’s less potent.

I use both fresh and powdered form and find that the powdered form, provided organic and of good quality, is just as beneficial.

Benefits of Turmeric

Preventative against heart disease

Preventative against certain cancers

Preventative against Alzheimer’s disease

It is Anti-Inflammatory

May relieve osteoporosis symptoms

It is Antifungal

It is Antibacterial

Treats skin conditions

Helps lower cholesterol

High in antioxidants

May help treat depression

The list of benefits can go on and on. There are many studies proving the benefits of adding this superfood to your diet, you can even purchase tablets if you don’t like the taste

How to use it

Use it to make turmeric lattes, as one of your spices in soups and sauces and add it to your veggies before roasting. I even like using it in my oats (as can be seen in the photos below). Make sure you add a crack of fresh black pepper, it helps the body absorb turmeric better!
