Switching off and Shutting down 🙌🏻

Good morning beautiful people, I hope you’re all doing well ♥️

Ian and I just got back from a long weekend in Naples. We were there to attend our dear friends’ wedding which was absolutely beautiful.

We stayed for 4 nights in Chiaia and made absolutely no plans, other than attending the aforementioned nuptials, during our stay.

I often find that when we’re on holiday, we try to see and cram as much as possible. This time however, we were both so tired and burnt out before leaving, that we decided to plan nothing at all and just play it by ear. Boy what a good choice that was.

Having some time to do whatever we felt like at any given time, without rushing from one thing to the next, was absolute bliss; and the “bad” rainy weather we encountered was actually a blessing in disguise. We only had one day of uninterrupted sunshine, Friday – which was luckily the day of our friends’ wedding.

I left Malta feeling exhausted, run down and unenthusiastic to say the least. Between work, workshops, blog work, planning our own wedding and the one million and one events we have in between, it’s been a bit much lately. Believe me when I say that I am very grateful for all of it, but taking a break from it all every once in a while is very much needed. Now, after 4 days of good food, quality time with some great friends on Friday and quality time together for the remainder of our trip, I’m feeling like myself again – recharged and ready to go.

From long walks on the promenade, to indulging in delicious food to reading a good book in just a couple of days and forgetting to even look at my phone – switching off has done us both a world of good.

It’s so easy to fall into the “trap” of wanting to do it all and to capture and share your experiences in real time. I’m personally a fan of social media – it’s an incredibly useful tool to connect with people. However I personally believe that a digital detox is certainly in order every once in a while. At least for me!

We see it everywhere; couples at dinner staring at their phones. Teens walking around together never looking up from their devices. Believe me, I’ve been guilty of this many times myself so trust me, I’m certainly not judging. But I do feel that sometimes, when we’re so consumed with what’s going on online, we forget to look around and experience what is actually happening in real time!

Appreciating the moment without interrupting it to take the perfect instagram photo, sitting down for dinner and not leaving your phones on the table and even just simply enjoying the view without trying to capture it can be so so rewarding, relaxing and pleasurable.

If you too feel overwhelmed, run down, tired and burnt out, take some time, even if just a few hours or better yet a day. Spend time with a loved one, leave your phone behind, get lost in a good book or simple go for a long walk by the sea or in nature. Take some time and actually shut down. No emails, no social media, no calls and messages, no online comparisons, no trying to keep up with everything. Just be for a while ♥️

And with that, I’m going to leave you to get started with another eventful and busy week, working on projects I’m excited to start and events I’m looking forward to attend.
