Good morning beautiful people, I hope you’re all doing well!
Today, I want to share a relatively new discovery with you all. My reason for trying the products I’m about to mention, is due to the sheer volume of questions I get from people who would like to eat healthily but do not have time to prepare their own food.
I’m a big believer in meal prep and taking time to prioritize health through preparing easy meals and snacks and so on, however, I too have trouble finding time to prep my every meal. Life often gets really busy and despite my efforts, some days it feels impossible to do all that I’ve set out to do. So what ends up happening, more often than not, is that I just don’t bother to take anything with me because I’m too pressed for time to prepare anything before I leave home and try to find something healthy when I’m out.
I was recently roaming the health section in a supermarket, which I often do, and came across FEED. They had a range of meals in the form of bars, ready made shakes and powders in bottles that you just add water to. They are vegan, gluten and lactose free and are said to be complete meals due to the amount of vitamins, minerals, proportion of carbs, fats, protein and fibre they contain. There are both full and light versions in the form of powder bottles and a large variety of flavors.
The above represents my current situation – I’m writing this Friday morning (to likely publish Monday morning) while rushing to meet up with clients very soon, then meetings, then grocery shopping, then come back home to cook for tonight and prep some things for tomorrow then meet some friends by 7pm – just a typical busy day! I’m having one of these FEED meals because I’m tired, hungry, I was out for a good 14 hours yesterday so just made a really quick plate of prepped ingredients that were left in the fridge and I genuinely don’t think I’ll manage to stop for a proper breakfast and lunch today!
Now, I will be the first to point out that I don’t feel as though we should have days that are too bust to stop for a decent meal and nourish our bodies. I often feel as though we are not living a life that we were meant to. In the sense that we should make time to stop and eat properly not chug a liquid meal between meetings in the car. However, I also realise that this is not always possible and having something that’s so handy can really help.
I’ve been testing these products out for three weeks and while I don’t feel I should recommend them as a meal substitute every single day, I did find them genuinely helpful on super busy days.
The ingredients are really good – that’s the reason I tried them. I often find that finding healthy ready made snack bars is not always easy and many contain too much added sugar. These bars and liquid meals do contain sugar – natural sugars which are still processed in the body the same way refined sugars are processed – however they also contain a lot of plant fibre and are fortified with many vitamins and minerals which is really good. These products are high in carbs, contain moderate amounts of protein and moderate amounts of fat. The fats are healthy fats though. They are derived from plants as the products are entirely plant based. Which means that they’re really good at providing energy. They are also SUPER FILLING!
My fave bar is the chocolate – for those of you who know me, this should come as no surprise…
While fortification of foods with vitamins and minerals has it’s benefits, the best source of vitamins and minerals come from whole foods because they are more biologically available. The same goes for any form of supplement. While they can definitely be helpful however they are no substitute for whole foods.
These are the ready made shakes I tried. If you do try these out as meal substitutes on busy days, I’m sure you’ll find that they are enough to keep you full. I had my boyfriend, mum, dad and some friends try these too – everyone was surprised at how filling they were.
So, to summarise, I like these products and will likely continue to use them sporadically throughout my busy days. While there really is no substitute for nutritious whole foods, having something that is easy to grab and go on hectic days is really helpful and the above products are a good option!
